How did you first become interested in missions and in Costa Rica specifically?
In Matthew 28:19 Jesus calls us to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” We began getting involved in “missions” in our neighborhood during the summer of 2006 by walking our neighborhood, inviting the poor and brokenhearted neighbors into our home, hosting a neighborhood party, and spreading the gospel. In June 2006, Brooke took her first short term mission trip to Costa Rica to serve with a team alongside Mark and Meg. We began praying about our involvement in the ministry in the months following her trip. God placed it upon our hearts to return as a couple to Costa Rica in November 2006. While shadowing Mark and Meg during that trip, God revealed his plan for our family.  We thank God for the privilege to be able to have even a small part in what He is doing in Costa Rica. We feel our purpose on this earth is to “preach good news to the poor.” (Isaiah 61:1) We feel we were uniquely created to serve the poor and broken hearted. We feel God’s blessing upon our decision to serve Him in Costa Rica.

What is your passion?
Our passion is to make disciples of Jesus Christ who go on to make more disciples who go on to make even more disciples. When we first arrived in Costa Rica, we were so excited to see the lost come to the feet of Christ. It is an honor and privilege to witness someone come to Jesus. It is not our responsibility, however, to save the lost. It is a direct command from Jesus Christ to make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20) and we take this seriously. It is our passion. We cannot make disciples of people who are not followers of Christ, therefore, sharing the gospel with non-believers is an integral part of the ministry as well. Seeing others grow in Christ and make Him the center of their lives is the heart of our ministry.

What are your primary areas of responsibility?
We currently serve in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica in a small town called Villarreal. Matt began working with two local pastors in training church leaders in discipleship with the goal that they will then go on to disciple the church, who will then reach out to the community. Matt finished his commitment with the First Baptist Church this past October 2010 in training it's leaders in reproducing disciples. By the time Matt completed his commitment with First Baptist, around half the church was either making disciples or being discipled themselves. Praise God for His strength and please pray for long lasting fruit.

In late 2010, we partnered with Calvary Chapel Villarreal and Potter’s Field Ministries and in September 2010, we began "Potter's Field Kids." We have the privilege of discipling children and pre-teens through weekly discipleship classes and a weekly Bible Club, as well as teaching English and offering daily tutoring and a hot meal three days a week.

We also disciple new believers in our neighborhood and from the local church. All of this however, is secondary to the primary ministry God has given us which is to glorify Him by making sure we are true disciples ourselves. We then believe our next responsibility is to nurture our marriage and our family.
